Construction Worker I - Facilities - Full Time/Days w/Varied Start Times

                                                                                                                                                   Under the management of the Director of Engineering/Facilities and the day to day supervision of the Project Manager, the Construction Worker I will perform a variety of apprentice, semi­skilled duties in the repair, servicing, general maintenance and new construction of the hospital's physical plant, equipment and associated Buildings to accomplish the objectives of the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Construction Project Support:

  1. Assist in parts, materials and equipment job take-offs as needed for all types of jobs.
  2. Assist in reading and interpreting architectural/engineering drawings and specifications.
  3. Understanding and complying with numerous local and state building codes.
  4. Understanding of construction standards.
  5. Operations of heavy equipment i.e. trencher, finisher, concrete saw, jack hammer, etc.
  6. Take initiative to expand performance of duties.
  7. Functions effectively under pressure and meets time parameters.
  8. Organize work and establish priorities.

B. Computer Support:

1. Log time & supplies appropriately on Work Order System.

C. Safety:

  1. Maintains a safe and clean work area.
  2. Reports areas and equipment in need of repair to Supervisor.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Make routine building rounds of the facility, medical office buildings, physical plant and other offsite buildings.
  • Learn basic computer skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of wall repair of drywall, plastered, stucco and other types.
  • Knowledge of different types of paints as required by applications.
  • Knowledge of all construction materials and their uses.
  • Knowledge and safe use hand and power tools i.e. layout and measuring tools, cutting tools, drilling and boring tools, finishing and fastening tools, etc.
  • Knowledge of the uses of the more common hand tools.
  • Knowledge of the safety issues related to the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of ladder and scaffolding safety. 
  • Knowledge of self protection equipment i.e. gloves, eye protection, ear plugs, etc.
  • Knowledge and safe use hand and power tools i.e. layout and measuring tools, cutting tools, drilling and boring tools, finishing and fastening tools, etc.
  • Knowledge of self protection equipment i.e. gloves, eye protection, ear plugs, etc.

Skills

  • Installation of a Stud Wall
  • Drywall Installation
  • Drywall Patching
  • Painting
  • Use of Construction Tools (tape measure, ladder, drills, saws, hammers, screwdrivers, etc.)
  • Operating of Equipment (trencher, finisher, concrete saw, jack hammer, etc.)

Abilities

  • Ability to understand simple construction work schedules.
  • Ability to read and comprehend all warning signs and labels on the construction site.
  • Ability to read and write English

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High School graduate
  • 2 years experience in the construction field or related fields.

  • Conforms with and supports hospital quality assurance and improvement guidelines
  • Ability to participate effectively in department and hospital staff education

  • Ability to give and support the highest level of patient/customer satisfaction at all times
  • Supports and adheres to the values and mission statement established by the AVH Board of Directors Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Corporate Compliance rules and regulations, complies with duty to report behavior standard, demonstrates understanding of purpose for Corporate Compliance hotline and importance of seeking guidance from a supervisor when in doubt regarding a possible corporate compliance issue

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work usually performed in a high temperature and noisy environments.
  • Work often in tight working conditions.
  • Work often requires lifting of up to 50 Ibs.
  • Work in environments with high amounts of dust.
  • Work on ladders.
  • Work with power tools
  • Work often requires stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling in awkward positions.
  • Work in environments, which put them at risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens or TB. Employees are trained to always use Universal Precautions in these environments
